Emma Thompson in a period piece. It concerns the unusual relationship of writer Lytton Strachey (Jonathan Pryce) and painter Dora Carrington (Thompson) in their insular world of upper-class friends and other artists in England between the Great Wars. When we first meet Strachey he's a fastidious homosexual of thirty-six going on seventy-six. He mistakes Carrington, with her bobbed hair and masculine clothes, for a boy. Despite this inauspicious beginning, they soon find themselves fascinated with each other, then the fascination turns to love. Their non-sexual relationship endures in spite of her marriage, their other lovers and their lover's lovers. As the years go by, a flow chart might help out the viewer trying to remember who's who.

Dix-huit ans après leur mariage, le compositeur de musique Jacques Favier (Louis Jouvet) et sa femme Sylvia se rendent au lieu de leur première rencontre. Le même soir, le couple fait la connaissance d'une jeune pianiste, Monelle Picart, que Jacques décide de prendre comme élève et de révéler au public. A la suite d'un récital au cours duquel Favier et sa protégée obtiennent un grand succès, un hebdomadaire, brodant sur un propos désobligeant, laisse entendre que Monelle est la maîtresse de Favier. A la lecture de cet article, ce dernier s'indigne et réagit violemment ; mais Monelle, romanesque, devient ou croit devenir amoureuse de son professeur. Poursuivant celui-ci de ses assiduités, elle finit par le troubler véritablement. Favier, qui aime profondément sa femme, parvient à se libérer du charme qu'exerce sur lui la jeune fille, mais trop tard pour empêcher Sylvia de mettre fin à ses jours. Un film d'Henri Decoin.

The exquisite circularity of the roundelay has always been an attractive cinematic device, but never has it been used with more delicacy and canny insight than in La Ronde, Max Ophüls's adaptation of the Arthur Schnitzler play Reigen. The camera glides, swirls, and delicately dances around fleeting moments between lovers, from chance meetings and secret trysts, to the sincere but hopeless courtship by a besotted admirer, to the relaxed banter of cuckolding married couples. Ophüls's wry glimpses behind closed doors and pulled curtains are both cynical and sweet, generous of character but suspect of motive. As one scene ends, we waltz along as the characters change partners and dance again and again; we follow streetwalkers and soldiers, courtesans and counts, until we come full circle.

Jessica's extraordinarily strong will and heart enables her to rebel against her fanatical, cult-like upbringing. From seven to seventeen Jess is brainwashed to be one of the 'saved', to devote her life to Jesus, to follow the discriminatory teachings of Pastor Finch and his understanding of Revelations. As her warm personality dictates she succeeds in fitting into this regime and spreads the word of Jesus in a fairly content manner. But when her friendship with Melanie develops into something a little more 'unnatural' she easily realizes the error of the Pastors teachings. The girls are subjected to terrible treatment to convince them to repent. Based on Jeanette Winterson's semi-autobiographical novel.

A man, feeling pressure from his wife for a better lifestyle, takes a new job with increased pay but added stress. To make matters worse, he becomes embroiled in legal actions concerning an inheritance from his grandmother. On top of all this, he learns that some of his actions in Italy during World War 2 have come to haunt him. This is a well told story with many sides to it, and I feel the use of flashback went a long way in making it even better. Well worth seeing.

One of the sad truths about our current distribution system is that many unique films are overlooked by distributors in favor of movies deemed more "marketable." Such was the case with Interkosmos, the wholly original debut feature from Chicago video artist Jim Finn. Finn uses a faux documentary format to tell the story of an apocryphal Eastern bloc space mission to colonize the outer reaches of our solar system - not exactly the most commercial of projects. But Interkosmos is so wonderfully strange that it deserves to find a cult audience on DVD.
